1. Backyard Ultra: an unrivalled test of physical and mental fitness
Imagine a race that’s part endurance, part psychological warfare, and you won’t even come close to what it takes to complete a Backyard Ultra. If you’re a fan of running, but you need a goal, and in some masochistic way, you like to suffer – then this is the right challenge for you.
The Backyard Ultra is an organised endurance running event where participants run a 4.2-mile (6.7km) loop on the hour, every hour, until the last man standing. That’s not all though, runners also have a 60-minute time limit to contend with per lap and if you miss the cut off, then it’s game over. No second chances. With building exhaustion, sore muscles, and a wavering resolve, it’s the ultimate test of endurance and mental toughness.
The concept of the Backyard Ultra has surged in popularity in recent years since its inception in 2011, when the idea was invented by Gary ‘Lazarus Lake’ Cantrell. Those in the endurance world simply know him as ‘Laz’, the inventor of the infamously difficult Barkley Marathons. Since all that’s needed is a wristwatch, a short course, and an iron will, Laz’s aim was to create a concept more ‘accessible’ to the masses and thus, the Backyard Ultra was born.
From a backyard in Tennessee to a worldwide phenomenon, these days there are hundreds of backyard-format events across the globe. Plus, you can recreate the concept DIY-style in the comfort of your own neighbourhood, should you wish. It’s a brilliant challenge to aim for in 2026, being both parts achievable and deceptively difficult.

2. Spartan obstacle race: test your hybrid, real-world fitness
Since its inception in 2010, Spartan Race has rapidly climbed the ranks to become one of the world’s most popular obstacle course race series. A glorious test of running, strength, grit (both mud and the symbolic kind) and just a little suffering, it’s designed to push participants both physically and mentally. Those who reach the finish line can officially claim warrior status.
Classic Spartan challenges during an event include spear throw, rope climb, monkey rings, sandbag carries, wall climbs, barbed wire crawls, Hercules hoist, and more. Eligibility criteria include functional strength, willpower, and the motivation to get stuck into each challenge.
Spartan offer a range of distances, including 5km (about 20 obstacles), 10km (25 obstacles), 21km half-marathon (30+ obstacles), or the Spartan 50km Ultra (60+ obstacles). There’s also the opportunity to earn a Spartan Trifecta, which involves completing three races of increasing distance in the same calendar year.
With events held in the UK, US, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, you should be spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting your Spartan challenge for 2026.

3. Hyrox: the ultimate duo challenge
We’ve covered Hyrox a lot here on Men’s Fitness, and that’s because it’s such a universal and addictive functional racing challenge. Let us explain. Hyrox follows the same format in every race, worldwide. The brilliance of Hyrox rests in its simplicity. No matter which event you take part in, you can compare your results to those across the globe.
The ultimate run-lift-HIIT challenge, the classic Hyrox format involves an 8km (5 miles) running and eight stations, broken up into 1km/1 station chunks. The standard stations in Hyrox include: ski erg (1km), sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing (1km), farmer’s carry, sandbag lunges, and wall balls.
The challenge of Hyrox will appeal to you if you’re a fan of those big arena vibes, the crowd, and the hype. Though you can compete solo, it’s also popular to take on the challenge as a relay or duo, in either the same-sex or mixed category. Why not team up with your best gym buddy and motivate each other to push your limits in a joint fitness challenge in 2026?

4. Ironman triathlon: diversify into the world of endurance multisports
No, we’re not talking about that popular Marvel character. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you would have heard of the lofty goal of an Ironman triathlon. Unlike the fast-paced Olympic triathlon racing you may have seen on telly, an Ironman is all about extreme cardio endurance. Athletes must complete 3.8km open-water swim, directly followed by a 180km bike, and then straight into a full marathon run.
It’s definitely not for the faint-hearted. Yet, Ironman has become increasingly popular since the pandemic. If you usually stick to the gym to get your post-workout endorphin rush, Ironman training is a great excuse to get outside more and explore your local countryside. A human-powered challenge of epic proportions, Ironman is a brilliant yet challenging goal for athletes of any fitness. Why not add your name to the list of M-dot finishers in 2026?

5. Strongman Event: the pinnacle of strength and power
A Strongman event is a competition designed to test raw strength, power, endurance, and sometimes even strategy. The event often involves unconventional, heavy, or awkward objects. Strongman is more than just lifting barbells, it’s about proving you can move, carry, push, or pull incredibly heavy things in real-world scenarios.
If you’re a gym rat to the extreme and lifting heavy stuff is the bread and butter of what makes you tick, then you’re already a future Strongman in the making. At its core, Strongman involves lifting heavy objects often above what you’d see in a standard gym. Functional strength and variety both come into play, with no two events being alike.
Common Strongman competitions could involve lifting atlas stones onto platforms of varying heights, a log press, farmer carries, yoke walk, tyre flip, car pull, and deadlifts with unusual bars. If you’re after a competition to test your full body strength to the max in a high-adrenaline and competitive atmosphere full of camaraderie, then Strongman is the next challenge for you in 2026.

6. David Goggins 4x4x48: DIY mental toughness challenge
While the world was reeling in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, another man called David Goggins was cooking up something entirely different that would quickly become a global phenomenon. First debuted on social media, Goggins invited followers to join him in running four miles every four hours for 48 hours.
What initially started out as a personal experience, quickly evolved into a public endurance challenge that took the fitness world by storm. Like the Backyard Ultra, all that the 4x4x48 challenge requires is a route, a watch, and a will.
It’s not an official event, anyone can take on this challenge at any time and anywhere in the world. Unlike some of the suggestions in this list, Goggins’ challenge is completely free and accessible to all runners. Some have used it as a vehicle to raise funds or awareness, while others as a means of social connection and community.
Goggins says the challenge isn’t merely about physical fitness, it’s designed to “callous your mind” and build mental toughness in the face of building fatigue and discomfort. So if you’re looking to step out of your comfort zone in 2026, consider taking on this feat of mental toughness.

7. Thru-hike your way to adventure
If you’re after something a little different from the classic endurance and fitness challenges mentioned above, then a thru-hike will truly broaden your horizons. A thru-hike is an extended, end-to-end hike along a designated long-distance trail. One of the most well-known thru-hikes in the US is the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), which stretches some 2,650 miles from the Mexican border to Canada, through the desertscape of California, the stunning peaks of the Sierra Nevada in Oregon, and the lush evergreen forests of Washington.
Unlike short weekend hikes or day trips, a thru-hike usually takes weeks or months to complete and covers the entire official route from start to finish. It’s not just about walking, it’s about endurance, planning, and self-reliance. You carry your essentials in a backpack, sleep along the trail, navigate varying terrain, and push through changing weather.
Each day tests your stamina, mental grit, and ability to keep moving even when your body is tired and your mental reserve low. If the wild is calling, why not take a look at this list of official thru-hikes and plan your biggest adventure yet in 2026.

8. Marathon: a cult classic for a reason
The marathon – a classic yet timeless challenge that most fitness enthusiasts are likely to consider at some point in their life. Don’t deny it! Supposedly originating from ancient Greece around 490BCE, a Greek soldier named Pheidippides is said to have run 25 miles (40km) from the battlefield of Marathon all the way to Athens to deliver news of victory over the Persians. Upon reaching Athens, reports say he excitedly exclaimed “we have won!” before promptly keeling over dead from exhaustion.
Later in 1896, the marathon distance was revived in the first modern Olympic Games in Athens and thus, the marathon as we know it today was born. A less dramatic yet equally exuberant marathon debut could be on the cards for you, if you’re looking for a running challenge to get your teeth into next year.
You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to the marathon distance since most major cities across the world host their own marathon. There’s also plenty of small-town events or off-road options to choose from, and you could even delve into the world of ultra-running if 42.2km seems a little short. Plus, it’s easy to get the whole family on board – just use your marathon as an excuse for an exotic, destination holiday!

9. CrossFit Open: open yourself up to community
CrossFit has been around for a while now and they describe the concept as “constantly varied functional movement at high intensity”. More than that though, CrossFit has become a popular movement that combines functional fitness with a strong sense of community.
The CrossFit Open is a global, online competition that allows anyone, anywhere in the world, to test their fitness against thousands of other athletes. It’s the first stage of qualifying for the CrossFit Games, but mostly it’s a community-wide fitness challenge for all abilities.
The Open usually happens once a year, over 3–5 weeks (commonly in February or March). During this time, a new workout is announced each week, known as the WOD (Workout of the Day). Participants complete the workout on their own or at a registered CrossFit venue and submit their scores online, which then gives them a global rank.
It’s not as tangible as a race like an Ironman, but the CrossFit Open provides functional athletes with structured and fun fitness goals. Workouts are scalable too, meaning beginners can attempt lighter versions, while elite athletes perform the prescribed weights and movements.

10. Cycling Sportive: explore new vistas on two wheels
A cycling sportive is a long-distance, organised big group ride designed for amateur cyclists and bike fans who want to push their limits in a supportive, timed environment. Sportives typically range from 50 to 100+ kilometers and are littered with timed checkpoints, rest stops, and refuelling stations.
Typically featuring scenic routes and sometimes challenging climbs, a sportive is a brilliant excuse to get outside and explore your local roads and cycleways. Riders of all levels participate, from casual weekend cyclists to seasoned athletes, making it a great way to challenge your bike endurance while soaking in the camaraderie amongst fellow riders.
