Looking to add the icing on the cake for your session? Try adding finishers on to your workout to exhaust those muscles

Adding finishers can really boost your workout. They can be any exercise or combination of exercises tagged onto the end of your workout with the aim of exhausting your muscles and ‘finishing’ the job.

We recommend taking no more than five to ten minutes, but you should ring out every last ounce of effort in that time. Here’s why adding finishers makes a difference

Add finishers to boost your workout
  1. Fat loss
The best finishers are high-rep, high-intensity exercises that rev up your metabolism before you head for a cold shower and a lie down.

The aim might be to blitz your muscles one last time, but the extra effort is also going to elevate your heart rate and burn through calories.

  2. Endurance
Maintaining a raised heart rate for just a few minutes more at the end of each workout will eventually add up to enhanced aerobic capacity.

Your body will get used to working hard that little bit longer and over time your perceived effort’s going to come down a notch.

  3. Bang for your buck
If time is of the essence, finisher sets are the perfect way to squeeze every last drop of effort out of your working muscles.

They add volume to your sessions and ensure maximum growth, forcing your body to adapt to more intense demands than standard reps and sets.

  4. Mental resilience
You’ve been in the gym for 45 minutes, you’re tired and want to go home – the last thing you want to do is a finisher that’s going to make your lungs burn and muscles shake.

Which is why you should do it. Finishers forge self-belief and determination, making you realise you can always go the extra mile.

  5. Feel-good factor
And when it’s finally time to go home, you’ll have a genuine sense of achievement that you pushed on through – not to mention the serious pump that comes with forcing out those final few reps. Who’s got tickets to the gun show?
