How we test skipping ropes

Our experienced product tester Lucy Gornall tested each skipping rope set featured in our group test over the span of at least a month. She put them through a range of workouts and speed drills, and used all included accessories and rope weights, judging each system on the smoothness of their rotation, their grip and durability – before awarding a final score that also took into account price, availability and included accessories.

You’ll get change from a tenner with this rope, which is exceptional value in today’s economy. Plus, although it isn’t a speed rope per se, it can rotate quickly and feels consistently smooth.

Design features of the Amonax skipping rope

Amonax’s patented funnel technology reduces friction between the rope and the handles, and supposedly prolongs the lifetime of the product by up to three times when compared to a conventional skipping rope. Its design certainly prevents the rope from tangling.

The handles are made from shatterproof plastic and coated in memory foam, making for some of the comfier skipping rope handles we’ve held. Those handles are quite long, too, offering a secure grip and making it easy to adjust between tricks.

Changing the length of this 3.1m rope is achieved by simply unscrewing the handles and moving the rope length adjuster, so there’s minimal fuss, and the wire is light and packs away easily.

Its rotations are seamless and its 4mm rope – with strong steel wire coated in a high-density PU material – makes it resilient to abrasive outdoor flooring. All in all, the Amonax is a solid, comfortable rope for all levels.

What other skipping ropes should I consider?

The Amonax skipping rope is undoubtedly a budget option, but if you’ve got some extra money to spend, it might be worth looking at something like the Crossrope Speed Performance Set. This set of ropes offer fantastic weight variation and the great handle rotation makes life much easier. The lifetime warranty isn’t to be sniffed at, either.

The Mirafit Battle Jump Rope is one of the heaviest on the market, meanwhile, so while it’s not suitable for beginners, it can provide a real challenge to more experienced exercisers who are looking to up their performance, and their gains, even more. On the other end of the spectrum, the Freeletics Jump Rope is lightweight, well-put-together, and ideal for speed sessions.
