It certainly looks the part, but does this Filson x Ten Thousand Tactical Hoodie perform where it counts?
If you’ve ever owned any of Ten Thousand’s workout gear, you’ll know how robust it is. Its collaboration with hip apparel brand Filson has produced a range of striking workout wear, including this Filson x Ten Thousand Tactical Hoodie. On paper it certainly has the pedigree, but out in the gym, on the track and on the streets does it have what it takes to be one of the best men’s hoodies?

When I was awaiting delivery of my Filson x Ten Thousand Tactical Hoodie, I envisaged it being a windproof mid- or outer layer I could take on my multi-day excursions into the Highlands, as well as lightweight overnight camping treks closer to home. When it arrived, however, I immediately changed my mind. Its striking design, eye-popping colorway and sheer quality feel made me think it was far too nice to mess up messing about in the hills.

The Tactical Hoodie has a fairly athletic fit, so fits quite slim-lined over a single base layer or compression top. Despite its windproof credentials, it’s designed more as a mid-layer than outer layer, but I can see it working well as the latter on cooler spring or autumn evening out on the trails.
It’s made from a breathable and wind-resistant nylon / polyester / spandex blend, with a lofted fleece interior designed to provide warmth without overheating. The main zip runs from chin to sternum so you can dial in the amount of extra ventilation you need.
There are plenty of storage options on the Filson x Ten Thousand hoodie. Two zippered hand pockets are smaller than usual, but that helps the top retain its slim profile. There’s another zipped pocket on the left chest, big enough for a phone. There’s also a smaller one on the left upper arm, the perfect size for credit cards.

Three months after receiving the Tactical Hoodie, and I’ve changed my mind. After using it on multiple winter trail runs, park workouts and runs to freezing wild swims or sauna sessions, I’ve realized how robust this top is. After regular abuse it still looks brand new – there’s not a mark on it and no seams show the slightest hint of fraying.
Because the quality of the materials and workmanship is so good I did take it on my Highland excursions. And I’m glad I did. Though I needed an extra waterproof shell to fend off the worst of the Scottish rain, the Tactical Hoodie coped admirably with everything from squally showers to biting wind and sleet. I’ve never had such comfy evening in Highland bothies.
I really appreciated the adjustable hood, combined with the half-zip that goes right up beyond the chin. The slightly elasticated hem and cuffs ensured they stayed put even when I was scrambling over rocks. During those moments of more intense activity I didn’t overheat as I’d feared (though I have since, when wearing it in the gym).
Should you buy the Filson x Ten Thousand Tactical Hoodie?
If you’re looking for an outdoor-focused windproof hoodie that will spare you from all but the worst elements I don’t think you can go wrong with the Filson x Ten Thousand Tactical Hoodie. Yes, it’s fairly expensive. But I’m sure this will last me for years-worth of adventures to come, as well as the more mundane local fitness fixes. It’s a striking design that looks great during downtime too, and will fit snugly beneath a down jacket if you want to layer up. As long as you don’t intend to wear it for your HIIT workouts or summer track sessions, I don’t see how you’ll be disappointed with it. For me it’s right up there with the best workout clothes.
