Foodspring Whey Protein is a tasty, low-calorie and good value shake that packs 24g of protein in five moreish flavours, says nutritionist Rob Hobson…

Foodspring’s range of shakes combines protein concentrate (69%) and isolate (30%). A 30g serving gives you 24g of protein, enough to support muscle protein synthesis post workout. The product also contains 9.8g of branch chain amino acids (BCAAs), including leucine. It’s a good option to use instead of – or as well as – protein bars, and is one of our best protein powders.

How we test the best whey protein powders

Registered nutritionist (AFN) and sports nutritionist (SENr) Rob Hobson only tested chocolate-flavoured powders to provide consistency in his reviews. He judged them on their taste, texture, solubility and nutritional effectiveness, as well as cost per serving and availability. He also took into account the variety of flavours and any recyclable packaging.

Foodspring Whey Protein in use

Each serving contains 112 calories when mixed with water, so it’s a good shout for people trying to build lean muscle mass while keeping their overall energy intake in check. This powder’s low in sugar and fat and combines sucralose and the natural sweetener stevia. The sweeteners have a slightly bitter aftertaste, but it’s not strong or unpleasant.

The shake mixes well to give a smooth texture and it’s pleasantly palatable when mixed with milk or water. The ingredient list is minimal and contains just the essentials of a good protein shake.

The packaging is 100% recyclable, and while no scoop is included this is likely to do with issues around recycling. Foodspring recommends you mix three tablespoons of powder with 300ml water to obtain the right dose and consistency.

Sizes and availability

Foodspring Whey Protein is only available in a 750g tub, and there are no discounts when you bulk buy. However, you get 25 servings from each tub, equating to just over £1 per serving. We found the tub slightly easier get into than most self-sealing pouches. It’s only available online but our order was quick to arrive.
