Trade the weights room for the wild with this hybrid endurance format like no other.
Searching for your next fitness challenge? Step forward, the adventure race: a one-day event comprising running, cycling and kayaking.
If it sounds tough, it is. But it’s also accessible to anyone who can run 10k, with an emphasis on completion over competition.
There are a number of recently created events across the UK, but Quest Wales is the most popular. Taking place on 20 June 2020, the race sees participants run, ride and kayak their way through Snowdonia National Park.
There’s the choice of 23k, 38k and 50k routes, and the inevitable inclines of the North Wales mountains are tempered by an infectious spirit of camaraderie.
If you need more convincing, here are a few more reasons to try your hand at adventure racing…
Have a weekend away with mates
While Quest Wales attracts elite athletes, most are there for the experience. People tackle the course in groups and take the opportunity to get away into the mountains for the weekend. You can compete at your own pace and take in some of the best scenery the UK has to offer.
Test your fitness
For anyone stuck in a rut, or bored of their same-old routine, adventure racing is a tonic for stalled progress and waning motivation. But more than that, it’s a genuine challenge, with a taste of the unknown. Every kayaked after a duathlon? Of course you haven’t.
Soak up the support
Whether you’re graduating through the route lengths, beating your PB, or just plodding along with mates, everyone is united on race day.
At the finish line, you’ll find family, friends, food, drink and, naturally, Japanese hot tubs. Have a beer and revel in the post-race atmosphere.
See Snowdonia in all its glory
It’s estimated that nearly four million people visit Snowdonia National Park each year and Quest Wales provides an unrivalled opportunity for fully immersive sightseeing.
All distances take in the vast and varied landscape, starting and finishing in the picture-perfect village of Betws-y-Coed.
