Gold-medal-winning canoest and Red Bull athlete Joe Clarke reveals the brutal session keeping him fit from home during lockdown.

Canoest Joe Clarke's 'Death By Assault Bike' Workout – Men's Fitness UK

“Training has been completely different during lockdown,” says Clarke. The 27-year-old, who won Canoe Slalom Gold in Rio four years ago, says British Canoeing has advised all members to stay away from the water to adhere with the government guidelines.

“But that’s made me think outside the box and train in a different way than I would have done previously,” he says, “which has been a nice change and provided different challenges.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to have a good gym set-up, but with only my fiancé to act as my spotter I haven’t been able to lift heavy on the bench!

“That’s led me to go down the CrossFit approach, doing workouts for time or number of reps etc.”

And Clarke’s new favourite toy is the assault bike, which he pairs with burpees for a circuit that sounds, if we’re honest, absolutely hideous.

“My ‘death by assault bike’ weekly workout has been a highlight and also a lowlight!” says Clarke. “It definitely does what it says on the tin…”
